How To Dispose Of Chemical Waste?

According to the environmental analysis and the reports, it has been determined that chemical waste is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. It cannot be directly disposed of in the regular trash or the sewer system. The EHS Hazardous Waste Program must mostly dispose of chemical wastes. To remove hazardous waste from your laboratory, you must do the following.

1. It is suggested to first store the chemical wastes in specific containers such as plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are preferred more compared to glass for storing hazardous waste. In the case of compatibility, it does not create any issues.

2. Chemical waste containers should be properly labeled in the following ways.

· Full chemical quantity and name of the Toxic chemical disposal. Every chemical in the mixture should be listed. Abbreviations, acronyms and ditto marks are not allowed to replace the words.

· The date on which the chemical waste is generates.

· Origin place (department, room number).

· Telephone number and the PI number.

· Bottle numbers that are assigned on the waste sheet.

What About The Complete Hazardous Waste Information Form Related To The Chemical Disposal

A completed Hazardous Waste Information Form must be submitted to the EHS office according to the form instructions. On this form, you should consist the:

· Full chemical quantity and the waste name. For mixtures, every chemical name and its available volume or weight have to be listed properly. Abbreviations, acronyms and ditto marks are also used in this section to replace words.

· Must have the Waste generated date.

· Department, room number, and another place of origin of chemical waste.

· PI’s name and telephone number.

· A contact name is necessary to answer the questions or open the door.

· Bottle numbers that are assigned to the bottle to dispose of the chemical waste.

· A speed type or account number.

4. It is also suggested to send the completed form to the Environmental Health and Safety Office. The form is then received by the EHS by the next day. The removal process of chemical waste then happens. Every container of chemical disposal has to be listed separately, tagged and sealed. The Leaking or open containers are unable to be removed.

5. Chemical disposal by sanitary sewer is only possible by approving the written permission from EHS. For this, you have to contact the Director or Chemical Waste Manager for more details and approvals.

After that, you also have to submit a complete list of all chemicals that you are going to dispose of to EHS.

Then, the EHS will review your request and give written approval on the basis of the disposal case.

Any formulation change, such as chemical volume and the new volume, will require a new review by EHS. It is suggested to dispose of the chemical in the chemical drum disposal system that is not allowed.
